This August is the celebration of one of the most influential car designs in history—the Lancia Aurelia Saloon that was introduced at the Turin Auto Show on May 4^th, 1950.

Most reading this will not be aware of the importance and place in motoring history that the Lancia Aurelia occupies. The B20 GT is probably the best-known version with its stunning GT styling by Pinin Farina. It accrued an enviable racing history and had many glamorous owners.  However, it was the Aurelia B10 Saloon that started the story.

Introduced to the public in 1950, and designed by Vittorio Jano, the Aurelia had an engine developed by Francesco de Virgilio, with a 1754cc V6.  It was the first V6 engine to be offered in a production car.

The first Aurelias were the B10 Berlinas.  These sedans also continued the pillarless door opening theme as seen on the Augusta and Aprilia Berlinas, as well as the later Appia.

A year after the Berlina appeared, the car which would forge the sports image of Lancia – the Aurelia Gran Turismo – was unveiled at the 1951 Turin Motor Show.  In all, over a 9-year production run, more than 18,000 Lancia Aurelias were built.  The car’s beauty and prestige were great in the 1950s, and it has grown in the intervening 70 years.
